Pokemon Heart & Soul · v2.0

About Pokemon Heart & Soul

Pokemon Heart & Soul is built around a simple idea: what if Johto had its own Game Boy Advance-era adventure? We bring together the world of Gold, Silver and Crystal, ideas from HeartGold and SoulSilver, and our own additions in one Gen 3-style journey.

Why Heart & Soul exists

The Johto we remember, in the GBA style we wanted to see.

Johto never received an official Game Boy Advance adventure, and that gap is part of what makes the idea so fun. The region has its own rhythm: quiet routes, distinct towns, phone calls, radio shows and an adventure that keeps unfolding after the League. Heart & Soul brings those memories into the colorful visual language of a Gen 3 Pokemon game.

We draw from both GSC and HGSS. Some moments lean toward the originals, others toward the remakes, and some are our own choices made to help the whole journey feel at home on GBA.

What v2.0 means for the game

A bigger step forward for Heart & Soul.

Under the hood, v2.0 moves the project to pokeemerald-expansion. The engine itself is not the headline for us; what matters is what it lets us put into the adventure: proper Pokégear trainer calls, a full radio, more flexible challenge settings, the expanded TM lineup and wider changes across Johto and Kanto.

Because the engine changed, saves from older Heart & Soul versions do not carry into v2.0. This version is meant to begin as a new adventure.

The little Johto details matter.

Trainer numbers lead to rematches and items. The radio sits inside the Pokégear with Crystal channels and new additions, and its music can keep playing while you explore. None of these systems needs to shout for attention; together, they are the kind of details that make Johto feel like a place rather than just a route between Gyms.

Built in the open.

Heart & Soul remains open source. We want the v2.0 codebase to be useful beyond this release too, especially for people who want to build their own ideas on top of a Gen 2-style GBA project.

Two regions, one journey

Johto still leads into Kanto—and Kanto gets more love in v2.0.

The second region gets overhauled maps and tilesets, while v2.0 also adds new postgame content. That familiar moment when the adventure opens into another region is still here, with more reason to keep exploring once you arrive.
